Labor Day Closure & Fun Facts!

Hey readers! Just a quick reminder that the library will be closed on Monday, September 7th so our staff can enjoy the holiday with their families.

Don’t worry, though—we’ll be back and ready to see your friendly faces when we reopen on Tuesday, September 8th at our normal hours (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)!

🛠️ Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

While Labor Day is famous for backyard barbecues, pool days, and the unofficial end of summer, it’s actually a holiday with deep history!

Back in the late 19th century, American workers were logging long hours (often 12 hours a day, 7 days a week!) in tough conditions. To honor the hard work, strength, and achievements of the workforce, labor activists organized the very first Labor Day parade in New York City on September 5, 1882.

By 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making it an official national holiday on the first Monday of September to give everyday workers a well-deserved break.

Fun Fact: Did you know the old rule about “not wearing white after Labor Day” came from the Victorian era? White clothing was considered summer vacation attire, so when Labor Day rolled around, people packed away their resort wear and put on their darker fall work clothes! (Feel free to rock your white sneakers on Tuesday anyway.)
